Elephants are one of the world’s most intelligent and empathetic creatures. They share powerful social bonds and make friends for life. Studies have shown that elephants will not only recognize one another after years of separation but also reunite like old friends! Gorongosa National Park is home to between 800 and 1,000 elephants. Each family is led by the oldest, wisest female: the Matriarch. She’s usually the one who leads her family back to the forest in the morning or to water in the afternoon.
